Marquette takes early exit from NCAA’s

March 19, 2010 By Bill Scott

The Marquette Golden Eagles were one of the hottest teams entering the NCAA Tournament, but that distinction means little after they were upset by the 11th seeded Washington Huskies 80-78 in San Jose on Thursday night.

Quincy Pondexter’s driving layup with 1.7 seconds left was the game winner.  It was the final nail in Marquette’s coffin.

The Golden Eagles started the second half on a 17-2 run and it looked like they were in the drivers seat.  But that advantage evaporated as the Huskies bounced back with a 20-6 run of their own.

So many times, Marquette had been used to pulling out close games in the end.  Last night, the Golden Eagles (22-12) didn’t have any of that late magic left.

Lazar Hayward had 20 points and Darius Johnson-Odom added 19 in the loss.
