Former Kiel teacher accused of assaulting students

April 7, 2010 By WRN Contributor

Bail has been set at $100,000 for a former Kiel High School teacher facing several felony sex charges.  Probable cause was found by a Manitowoc County Court Commissioner Wednesday to hold 32-year-old Ryan Zellner. The former Social Studies teacher and head girls basketball coach is being charged with sexual assault of a child, child enticement, use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, and sexual assault of a child by a school staff person.

Manitowoc County District Attorney Mark Rohrer says that Zellner allegedly abused multiple young girls. A regional task force is being assembled to deal with the investigation, and to determine just how many victims there actually are.

Kiel Police Chief Dave Funkhouser says Zellner’s behavior was premeditated and occurred over several years. He described Zellner as a predator who was targeting young girls.

Other conditions of bail for Zellner include having no contact with anyone under the age of 18, with the exception of his four-year-old child. He also can not coach or teach anywhere, and he must report to the Brown County jail each day before noon.

An initial appearance has been scheduled for next Monday.
