Racy book to remain on school shelves

April 13, 2010 By WRN Contributor

A controversial book will remain on the shelves of a Fond du Lac middle school library. The Fond du Lac School Board Monday night unanimously upheld a decision by a Reconsideration Committee and District Superintendent Jim Sebert to allow the Sonya Sones book One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies to stay at the Theisen  Middle School Library.

Ann Wentworth, the parent of a student at Theisen, objected to the sexual content in the book, which she believes is age inappropriate for middle school students. She appealed to the School Board. Wentworth has two other books she’d like to see removed, but beyond that is asking for a better selection method for materials.

School Board President Eric Everson says the process for reconsidering the book took a lot of time, but it was the first time the District had been faced with this kind of decision.

The other two books Wentworth is asking the District to reconsider are Forever in Blue: the 4th Summer by Ann Brashares, and Get Well Soon by Julie Halpern.
