Thursday was a good day to go low at the Masters

April 9, 2010 By Bill Scott

Thirty-0ne golfers broke par on the first day of the Masters at Augusta.  But none of the 31 had the last names of Kelly or Stricker.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly shot an even par 72 and Steve Stricker struggled with a 1-over par 73, on a day that a good score could be had.

50-year old Fred Couples fired a 6-under par 66 to take a 1-shot lead into today’s second round.  60-year old Tom Watson had his best round at the Masters in well over a decade when he joined a group of others at 5-under par 67.

Tiger Woods returned from his layoff and shot a 4-under 68.  Woods eagles two holes and could have had a third but lipped out a putt on 13.

Golfers on the course in the afternoon yesterday played in some rain.  But the rest of the weekend is supposed to be near perfect.  Expect scoring opportunities to go down as the tournament heads into the weekend.
