Accused murderer takes his own life

June 8, 2010 By WRN Contributor

An Eau Claire County man has taken his own life in jail rather than face a trial for the murder of his live-in girlfriend. 44-year-old Gregory Gubernot of Altoona was due to face trial beginning Monday, in the death of 43-year-old Theresa Still. He was charged with murdering Still on December 27th, then dumping her body more than 100 miles away in rural Adams County.

Eau Claire County District Attorney Rich White says Gubernot was found in his cell Sunday morning, having attempted suicide, and died Monday at a hospital.

The district attorney says the death should not leave the question unanswered of who committed the murder. “Gregory Gubernot killed Teresa Still, there is absolutely no doubt of that fact in my mind,” says White

Eau Claire County Sheriff Ron Cramer says Gubernot was not believed to be suicidal, and was being checked hourly along with other inmates. The Dunn County Sheriff’s Department and the State Jail Inspector will review the jail procedures. Cramer would not reveal the nature of Gubernot’s injuries.
