Milwaukee student drowns during field trip

June 15, 2010 By WRN Contributor

A Milwaukee Middle School’s class trip to a state campground in southeastern Fond du Lac County results in tragedy. About 80 students from Roosevelt Middle School were having a class picnic at the Mauthe  Lake Campground swimming area yesterday afternoon. They were supervised by eight teachers and staff.

Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan Waldschmidt says a staff member called 911 when it was realized that a 12-year-old boy was missing from a group of swimmers. About a half hour after the 911 call a Kewaskum Fire Department diver located Kamonie Slade about 25 yards from shore in 10 feet of water. He was flown to Theda Clark Regional Medical Center in Neenah where he was pronounced dead.

Counselors are being made available at Roosevelt Middle School to help grieving classmates.
