Abused pooch at center of legal tussle

July 13, 2010 By WRN Contributor

A legal battle over a beloved mutt. The pointer mix dog is named Emmi, and she was among 187 animals rescued from an Adams County residence. Steven Smith of Middleton decided to give Emmi foster care. “She was extremely depressed. She was malnourished. She was recovering from several infections. Just really bad shape,” Smith told WIBA.

Thee Smiths fell in love with Emmi and want to keep her, but the Adams County couple wants the dog returned. The Smiths even offered quite a bit of cash. “We threw a ridiculously large financial number at them,” says Smith. “Somewhere in the range of $12,000. And they said no.” In a plea deal on animal neglect and mistreatment charges, the couple is being allowed to get four of their animals back. But the Smiths are fighting, and currently have custody of Emmi.
