In defense of egg producers

September 2, 2010 By WRN Contributor

A nationwide salmonella outbreak has egg-producers in Wisconsin on edge, but one member of the industry says consumers shouldn’t be worried about the safety of their food.

Bill Rehm runs Daybreak Foods, headquartered in Lake Mills. He says the problem stemming from farms in Iowa make the entire industry aware of consumer worries. However, he says the facilities tied to the outbreak had some very poor sanitary conditions and do not reflect the rest of the majority of producers in the country.

Rehm says there’s no reason to fear eating eggs if you cook them properly. He says cooking it thoroughly, just like you would any other food item that comes from an animal.

Daybreak Foods has about nine million chickens in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio. They’re among the top ten egg producers in the country, and Rehm says they’re doing whatever they can to assure customers the problem farms that led to the salmonella outbreak are very much in the minority.
