Veteran Milwaukee cop faces OWI charge

October 7, 2010 By Bob Hague

A veteran Milwaukee police officer faces a drunk driving charge. Milwaukee Assistant Police Chief Edward Liebrecht has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after his car struck a tree early Thursday morning. Liebrecht was unhurt, according to a release from the Milwaukee Police Department. To avoid any potential conflict of interest, MPD requested the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office handle the investigation, which revealed that Liebrecht appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Liebrecht was in his personally owned vehicle and was unarmed. The 36 year veteran of the force was ticketed for 1st Offense Operating While Intoxicated and his police powers have been suspended. An internal investigation is pending.
