A new crusade against tobacco

November 1, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

Smoke Free Wisconsin has been successful in getting a statewide smoking ban enacted and pushing the cigarette tax to among the highest in the country. Executive Director Maureen Busalacchi says there’s another health threat they’re hoping to tackle and it’s directed at kids.

Busalacchi says the group is hoping to push the next Legislature to ban candy-flavored tobacco products, such as cigars with fruit flavors. She says those products use bright packaging colors and flavors that appeal to kids and teens, luring them in to try tobacco products.

Eventually, she says those kids start using stronger tobacco products.
