Want to add eight years to your life? Just quit smoking. “Research has shown that smokers who quit can expect to live at least eight years longer than those who continue to smoke,” says Laurie Pagel with the American Cancer Society in Wisconsin. Today is the Cancer Society’s 35th annual ‘Great American Smokeout.’ Pagel says it’s not easy, but there are new on-line tools available to help you quit successfully. “If they’re feeling like they’re having those cravings, which all smokers who are trying to quit do, there are tips and resources to help get them through their darkest moments,” she explains. About 800,000 Wisconsin adults smoke, and tobacco use is the leading cause of premature death in the Badger state.
