Hoffman officially retires

January 11, 2011 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Trevor Hoffman told MLB.com that he has decided to retire, ending an 18-year career.

Hoffman finishes with a record 601 regular-season saves, 42 in front of Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera, who is in second place at 559.

Hoffman is expected to return to the Padres, where he spent most of his career, to assume some sort of front office role.
