Democrats call budget an assault on families

March 1, 2011 By Andrew Beckett

Assembly Democrats on the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee say Governor Scott Walker’s budget plan wages war on Wisconsin families.

State Representative Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) calls the bill an assault on Wisconsin’s values. She says if the bill is Walker’s road map for change, then it’s a dead end for schools, cities, counties, and working families in the state.

Shilling says the Governor’s plan will cut nearly a billion dollars in local aid, while spending almost $5.7 billion on transportation funding. She says the governor has decided to take “transportation dollars over people” and that he support “concrete over the elderly.”

State Representative Tamara Grigsby (D-Milwaukee) says the bill is a sign of what’s to come from the Republican majority and shows there will be an annihilation of education and decimation of health care.

Democrats are pledging to offer alternative plans and are urging Republicans to negotiate on the bill.
