Injured officer going home

March 25, 2011 By WRN Contributor

A morale booster for Fond du Lac Police, as Officer Ryan Williams is being released from the Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah today. Williams was shot twice in the chest last Sunday while responding to a sexual assault complaint. Fellow officer Craig Birkholz was killed in the same incident, during which the shooter took his own life.

Fond du Lac Police Captain Steve Klein says they’re happy to hear Williams is being released and it’s really lifting up the spirits of everyone at the Department.

Based on the speed of his recovery, Klein says he believes Williams will be back patrolling the streets of Fond du Lac soon.

Klein says they are making arrangements to take Williams to Kenosha Saturday for Officer Birkholz’s funeral. He will be joining 16 squad cars and a couple of coach buses heading to the funeral, which will include most of the Department.

It will be the first time in the history of Fond du Lac that a city police officer will not be on duty. Other departments from across the area will be filling in.
