Marquette’s NCAA Tournament hopes get a boost

March 9, 2011 By Bill Scott

The Marquette Golden Eagles didn’t want to leave their NCAA Tournament hopes in the hands of the selection committee, so they went out and beat up Providence 87-66 in the opening round of the Big East Tournament on Tuesday night.

Darius Johnson-Odom had a game-high 23 points and Jimmy Butler added 19 points and 10 rebounds, improving to 19-13 on the season

Marquette, which shot  57% from the field, will face West Virginia in the second round of the tournament tonight.  Tip-off is set for 8:30pm.

The Golden Eagles scored the first 17 points to set the tone for the night.
