WIAA State Hockey tournament starts today

March 3, 2011 By Bill Scott

The WIAA boys and girls state hockey tournament gets underway today at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Day 1 starts with four boys quarterfinal games.  Green Bay Notre Dame (23-4), which lost in the semifinals at state a year ago, is facing Milwaukee Marquette at noon.  Marquette (25-2) has two previous state tournament appearances, but they’re still looking for their first win.

This afternoon (2:15pm), Middleton (19-4-1) faces Cedarburg (15-10-2).  Middleton comes in having won 7 of their last 8 games but is 0-2 in state tournament play.  Cedarburg has won six of their last 7.

In the night session, Eau Claire Memorial (28-1) enters the tournament on a 16-game win streak.  They’ll face Wisconsin Dells/Reedsburgh (21-5).  Wisconsin Dells/Reedsburgh is making its first ever state tournament appearance.

The late game has New Richmond (21-5) squaring off against last years state runnerup Wausau West (24-3).  West has won their last five games by a total combined score of 33-4.

The girls tournament starts Friday.  River Falls (23-3-1) faces Appleton West (15-11-1) while Mosinee (25-1) takes on Sun Prairie (22-3-2).  The winners meet in Saturday’s championship game.
