One dead, one escapes after high-speed chase

April 5, 2011 By WRN Contributor

A man died in a crash, and another driver is being sought after they were racing in stolen vehicles, and authorities chased them in-and-around Madison. It happened late Monday morning. Iowa County authorities said two vehicles were racing toward them.

Dane County officers picked up the chase as it continued on Highway 18-151. One driver crashed into a parked car at a grocery store in Verona. Officials said the driver tried to flee in the grocery store – and while officers kept chasing him, he went back out in the parking lot and stole an unlocked pick-up truck with the keys in it. The other suspect, meanwhile, drove away.

Officers said they just stopped chasing him for safety reasons when his car struck a large dip, went airborne, and slammed into a tree on Madison’s west side , killing the 20-year-old suspect. Police found nine guns in the car, and Dane County deputies said they were stolen from Richland County.

The car at the grocery store had been stolen from Crawford County. The stolen truck was later recovered, and the suspect apparently fled on foot. Authorities say he’s possibly armed-and-dangerous.
