GOP: Thompson “serious” about US Senate run

May 19, 2011 By Brian Moon

With US Senator Herb Kohl not planning to run for another term, names of potential contenders are being thrown around.

Wisconsin Republican Party Executive Director Mark Jefferson mentions some possible Republicans including state Attorney General JB Van Hollen, state Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, former Congressman Mark Neumann and former state Senator Ted Kanavas. Probably the biggest name on the list is former Governor Tommy Thompson.

Thompson mentioned running for US Senate as a challenger to then-incumbent Russ Feingold last year, but backed off. Jefferson believes the former Governor is “serious” this time.

“There is a different vibe out there. There is a different feel from people around him. They believe he is going to do it.”

House Representatives Tammy Baldwin and Ron Kind have been mentioned as Democrats in the mix.

The Democratic Kohl’s current term ends January 3rd, 2013.
