WIAA’s Board of Control extends hockey venue deal

May 30, 2011 By Bill Scott

The WIAA Board of Control approved a 5-year extension of the agreement with the Alliant Energy Center in Madison as the host venue of the State Boys and Girls Hockey Tournaments at Veterans Memorial Coliseum at its May meeting.

The Alliant Energy Center is currently planning more than $1 million in improvements for the Coliseum and its users.  Plans include installation of a new scoreboard with video capabilities with the intent to be available for the 2012 State hockey tournaments.  Also planned is a project to complete the refurbishing of approximately 1,200 seats in the upper bowl seating area prior to the 2012 tournament, with an additional 2,500 seats to be updated by 2014.

Veterans Memorial Coliseum, built in 1967, has been the site of the State Boys Hockey Tournament since 1976.  The extension means State Tournament hockey will be played at the venue at least through the 2017 season.
