Assessment mixup in Racine

July 15, 2011 By WRN Contributor

An 84 year-old Racine woman is asking city leaders for money which she claims was overpaid on the improper assessment of her home over 24 years. Alderman Robert Mozol told the city’s Finance Committee it seems only fair, given the extra 500 square feet she’s been charged because of a clerical mistake. Mozol said an outside only assessment listed a finished 2nd floor, but it’s actually unfinished attic space, accessible only by an outside ladder. Citing statutory time lines not being met on appeals, the Racine city council’s finance panel recommends a $450 refund from a new assessment, based on actual square footage.
