After squandering a 2-0 lead in the 8th inning, the Milwaukee Brewers fought back to notch a 5-2 win in 10-innings last night in Arizona over Diamondbacks. Unfortunately, OF Carlos Gomez broke his collar-bone while making a diving catch in the 4th inning.
Manager Ron Roenicke said after the game that Gomez would be out of action for at least 2-months, longer if he needed surgery which likely will be the season. Gomez has been platooning in center-field with Nyjer Morgan starting against left-handed starters. Gomez was batting .276 in that role and was 2nd on the team in stolen bases with 15. Morgan replaced Gomez in the line-up and drove in Mark Kotsay for the winning run with a single in the 10th. Ryan Braun had 3-hits on the night including his 18th homer run of the season. Braun started for the 2nd straight game after missing 10 of 13 games with a leg injury.
Chris Narveson’s stellar start only earned him a no decision. He pitched 7-innings of shut-out ball scattering 4-hits. Francisco Rodriguez started the 8th with a 2-0 lead but left with the game tied 2-2. Takashi Saito earned the win by pitching a scoreless 9th. John Axford closed out the 10th to earn his 26th save of the year and his 23rd straight.
The win also puts Milwaukee back on top of the National League Central Division. Pittsburgh is a 1/2 game back after losing to Cincinnati Wednesday. St. Louis dropped to 2-back of Milwaukee as they lost to the NY Mets in extra innings. Cincinnati is 4 1/2 back of Milwaukee.
The Brewers have won 4 of 5 and can win the 4-game series with a victory tonight. Zack Greinke takes on Ian Kennedy at Chase Field for an 8:40 first pitch. After the game, the Brewers head to San Francisco to close-out their 11-game road trip with a weekend series against the Giants.
