Some job layoffs at Wausau Paper are just coming to light. The company laid off 16 workers on July 8th because of a continued decline in its print and color paper sector. Eight of the jobs came from the Brokaw paper mill and the company’s corporate office in Mosinee; the rest from the company’s national sales organization based outside of Wausau.
Company officials say in an internal letter obtained this week that the layoffs were necessary despite closing a mill in New Hampshire and a converting center in Appleton and making millions in investments at the Brokaw mill and to a paper machine in Brainerd, Minnesota. Going forward, the company said it will flex its operating schedule and work Saturdays when demand allows.
