Proposed legislation would strengthen legal protections for domestic violence victims. State Senator Van Wanggaard is a former police officer with firsthand experience. He says many abusers under restraining orders often relocate to Wisconsin and resume the abuse. “The problem is, for years when we’ve had restraining orders that have come from other states, and we have person come here to our state, we can also have the offender follow that person,” said Wanggaard, who’s drafted the bill with state Representative Amy Loudenbeck. The bill addresses current law that often prevents victims in Wisconsin from obtaining restraining orders against individuals who are abusing, threatening or harassing them from other states.
