Brewers move 19-games over .500

August 15, 2011 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers are on quite a roll.  They won for the 16th time in the last 18 games by coming from behind to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1, sweeping Pittsburgh in the 3-game series at Miller Park.

Nyjer Morgan’s 10th inning sacrifice fly broke a 1-1 tie to give the Brewers the win.  The Brewers hold a 5-game lead in the National League Central division over the St. Louis Cardinals.  The Pirates meanwhile, have dropped 14 of their last 16 games.

Pittsburgh has now dropped 8-straight games at Miller Park this season, 14-straight dating back to last year and 36 of 39 since 2007.

Pirates right hander Charlie Morton extended his scoreless streak to 24 innings to protect a 1-0 lead.  But the Brewers got a huge break in the 8th.  The Pirates had gone to their bullpen and closer Joel Hanrahan truck out Morgan on a ball in the dirt.  The ball got by the catcher, allowing Morgan to reach first base and bring Ryan Braun to the plate.   He eventually delivered the game tying rbi single.  Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said the Brewers got some breaks and when things are going good, they’re going good.

Shaun Marcum didn’t get the win, but he was solid again for the Brewers, allowing just 1-run on 5 hits in 7+ innings of work.

The Brewers open a 4-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight.  Randy Wolf faces Ted Lilly in the pitching matchup.
