Tough one for WI-to-IA commuters

August 18, 2011 By Brian Moon

A number of bi-state commuters in southwest Wisconsin are dealing with a major detour. The Wisconsin and Iowa DOT’s have shut down a Mississippi River bridge connected Lansing, Iowa to Desoto, Wisconsin.

Emergency maintenance is being conducted on the Highway 9 bridge after a crack was found under the structure, during routine maintenance Wednesday. The bridge will be closed until further notice. The bridge was closed twice last year after it was hit twice by barges traveling on the river.

More than 2,000 vehicles travel across the bridge each day. The nearest open bridges on the Mississippi are 30 miles away in either direction at La Crosse and Prairie du Chien.
