Packers look to slow down Newton (AUDIO)

September 14, 2011 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers watched Carolina rookie quarterback Cam Newton pass

Dom Capers

for 422 yards in his NFL debut.  Newton will likely find life much more difficult against the defending Super bowl champs this week.

The Packers travel to Carolina on Sunday for their first road trip of the season.

Green Bay’s defense didn’t have an easy time of it in their opening week win over the Saints, but that was against veteran Drew Brees, who has a solid stable of receivers and a solid ground attack.

Defensive coordinator Dom Capers will start by asking his defensive players to tackle better, something they didn’t do well in the opener.  But Capers didn’t see the tackling as a big issue when talking earlier this week.

Capers gave his overall assessment of his team’s defensive performance in the season opening 42-34 win over the Saints.

Cam Newton showed patience in the passing game that hadn’t been seen during their first four preseason games.

Look for Dom Capers to draw up a defensive game plan that will do a much better job in confusing Newton in week two.  Newton will likely play Sunday like rookie quarterbacks in the NFL usually play.  Capers has drawn up plans to confuse veteran quarterbacks, you can bet he’ll have something special in store for Cam Newton on Sunday.

Newton has the experts that cover the NFL in awe of his opening week performance.  Look for Newton to come back to earth this Sunday and for all of those experts to curb their enthusiasm just a bit.
