With congresswoman Tammy Baldwin having announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Herb Kohl, Madison Democrats are gearing up to take Baldwin’s place. Representative Mark Pocan and Representative Kelda Helen Roys will be running to succeed Baldwin in the 2nd district. Baldwin is the most liberal member of the state’s congressional delegation, and Pocan and Roys both have strong liberal credentials. The 32-year-old Roys is an attorney and in her second term in the state Assembly. She is the former executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, a women’s health advocacy group. The 47-year-old Pocan is a small business owner who has been in the state Assembly since 1998. He previously served as co-chair of the powerful budget-writing Joint Finance Committee. State Senator Jon Erpenbach is also reportedly considering entering the race in the overwhelmingly Democratic district. No Republican candidates have announced yet.
