Day 1 State Football Championship wrap-up

November 18, 2011 By Bill Scott

Four state champions were crowned on day 1 of the WIAA State Football Championships at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison on Thursday.

Division 7 – Greenwood/Granton 40, Seneca 0

Hayden Hinker and Josh Harlander each rushed for more than 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead Greenwood/Granton to a 40-0 victory over Seneca.

Division 6 – Fond du Lac Spring 24, Shiocton 0

Darin Ward ran for 107 yards and a touchdown and Springs shut out its fourth straight postseason playoff opponent with a 24-0 win over the Chiefs of Shiocton.  The Ledgers finished their season with a perfect 14-0 record.

Division 5 – Colby 45, Lancaster 44 (OT)

Tyler Myers pulled down a 25-yard touchdown pass on a double-reverse flea flicker in overtime and Michael Knetter booted the game winning extra-point to lead Colby to the thrilling win over Lancaster.

It was the only game in the tournament, featuring a pair of unbeaten teams.  The 87 combined points set a state record for all divisions.  Lancaster was prevented from tying Stratford for the most state titles with seven.

Division 4 – Wrightstown 28, Somerset 26 (2OT)

The Wrightstown Tigers are in the winners circle for the first time since 2006, knocking off Somerset 28-26 in a state record 2 overtimes to win the Division 4 title on Thursday night.

Trailing Somerset 20-12 with 1:59 left, Wrightstown quarterback Jordan Johnson marched the Tigers 52 yards on 10-plays for a touchdown and subsequent 2-point conversion to force overtime.

Jackson Fox rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns in the win.  It’s the third state title overall for Wrightstown.

Three more title games will be decided on the final day of competition at Camp Randall Stadium today.

In Division 3, West De Pere will shoot for its second straight title against Wisconsin Lutheran at 10am.  In division 2, Waunakee takes on Waterford at 1pm and in Division 1, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln faces Kenosha Bradford at 4pm.
