UW-Stout tracks student drinking

November 4, 2011 By WRN Contributor

Freshmen at UW-Stout in Menomonie are now required to fill out an online assessment of their drinking habits.

The assessment, called “E-Chug” has been voluntary for about five years, but UW Stout officials have decided to make it mandatory for first year students as part of efforts to cut down dangerous binge drinking on campus.

Six students from the school have died in alcohol-related incidents over the past three years.

The survey asks questions about a student’s alcohol use and provides individual feedback. The answers are kept confidential and are not shared with the university.

Dean of Students Joan Thomas says the first six weeks are when new freshmen set the tone for their school drinking habits, and the school wants to be sure it’s doing a good job providing resource information on alcohol.
