GAB posts Walker recall petitions online

January 31, 2012 By Jackie Johnson

Interested parties can review all the recall signatures targeting Governor Scott Walker on the election agency’s website.

The Government Accountability Board’s Kevin Kennedy says in a statement they conducted a balancing test to determine whether some signatures could be redacted due to privacy concerns. The board determined it was in the best public interest to release all the petitions without blackening out any names.

Kennedy says, “Unlike an elector’s vote, which is private and confidential, the signing of recall petition is a public process.” The GAB says petition signers chose to participate in the public process of initiating a recall election. As of early Tuesday evening, over 153,000 pages of PDF copies of the petitions are available online.
