A disappointing finish for the hockey Badgers in Denver

March 12, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badger hockey team fell to Denver, 3-2 in overtime on Sunday night, likely ending their season.

The Pioneers game winning goal came 1:40 into overtime to send the Badgers (1-18-2, 11-15-2 WCHA ) out of the WCHA playoffs.

Denver’s Luke Salazar put the game-winning shot in on a wrap-around.  The tally gave Denver a 3-2 win in their best-of-three series.

Wisconsin took the lead first Sunday night when sophomore F Mark Zengerle scored a shot handed goal, giving him 50 points for the season.

After a Denver goal evened things up, sophomore Tyler Barnes centered the puck from behind the Denver goal line and it banked off of Denver goalie Sam Brittain and into the net.  That put the Badgers up 2-1

Badger goalie Joel Rumpel saved 30 shots Sunday night and finished the weekend with 96 saves on 101 shots.

Denver moves into the WCHA Final Five in St. Paul, while the Badgers season is likely over.
