Boys State Hockey starts today

The 42nd WIAA Boys State Hockey Championships open today at Veterans

WIAA State Hockey

Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. 

Following is the Day 1 lineup:

Eau Claire Memorial (21-4-2) vs. Brookfield Central/East (19-8) – noon
Wausau West (18-7-2) vs. Marquette (22-5) – 2:15 pm
Superior (15-9-1) vs. Notre Dame (24-3) – 6pm
Sparta Co-op (18-5-1 vs. Verona (25-1-1 – 8:15 pm

Wausau West returns to the field as the defending boys champion.  They’re making their third straight tournament appearance and 12th overall.  The Warriors also finished runner-up in 2000 and 2010.

Superior qualifies for the State Tournament for a record 34th time, and for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.  The Spartans have won a total of 12 State championships, which leads all schools. 

The 4-team girls tournament begins play on Friday with a pair of semifinals.

Hayward/Spooner (21-2-1) vs. D.C. Everest Co-op (22-3-1) – noon
Onalaska Co-op (25-2) vs. Kettle Moraine Co-op (20-6) – 2:15pm

The Onalaska Co-op team won the 2011 State Championship.
