Trooper stops suicidal driver

April 11, 2012 By WRN Contributor

Some quick action by a state trooper helped save the life of a woman from Fond du Lac. Sergeant Jeff Nelson was on Highway 41 on Tuesday, when he spotted a woman in a mini-van driving the wrong way toward him. Nelson says he threw his car in reverse on the northbound lane and caught up quickly with the driver, forcing her to pull over on an exit ramp.

Nelson grabbed her keys from the vehicle after the woman said she had been trying to commit suicide. As he was setting up a dashboard camera to record field sobriety tests, the woman exited her vehicle and started running for an overpass over the highway. Nelson chased after her, managing to grab and hold on to her until other motorists stopped to assist him.

The woman was placed under emergency detention and faces possible charges for OWI second offense and recklessly endangering safety. Nelson says he just happened to be in the “right place at the right time” to prevent a tragedy.
