WIAA to announce state basketball decision today

April 24, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) is expected to announce today where the state boys and girls basketball tournaments will be held.

The WIAA’s Board of Control will hold its meeting at 1pm in Stevens Point and then vote on the measure later this afternoon.  Executive Director Dave Anderson and Associate Director Deb Hauser will hold a news conference after the vote.

At state is whether or not the tournaments will remain in Madison or move to the Green Bay area.

The 11-person WIAA Board of Control in February approved a recommendation from Anderson to accept a bid by Ashwaubenon-based PMI Entertainment to host the basketball state tournaments as early as next year.

The WIAA then said it would enter into a five-year agreement with the PMI and the Resch Center if the University of Wisconsin couldn’t accommodate the tournaments in accordance with the terms of the existing agreements.

The major issue centers around UW’s ability to guarantee use of the Kohl Center for state tournaments.
