Will the Packers bring Donald Driver back?

May 21, 2012 By Bill Scott

Donald Driver has been installed as the favorite to win “Dancing with the

Donald Driver

Stars”.  As far as a 14th NFL season with the Green Bay Packers is concerned, Driver’s return is sketchy at best.

Driver has certainly been a fan favorite and an outstanding contributor as the Packers all-time leading receiver.

I’ve said all along that Driver has at least one more good year in him, but at what cost.

Driver has already made it known that he’d take a pay cut, but it goes beyond that.  The Packers haven’t been one of the best teams in the league for the last decade because they hang on to players too long.

Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have separated themselves from the emotion of making such moves and it’s worked well for them.  Surely both men would love to have a player of Driver’s toughness and character back for another year.  But would it cost you the losses of players like Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel.

The Packers signed Gurley and Borel when NFL teams tried to sign them off the practice squad late last season.  One or both of them could be ready to contribute this coming season.  If Gurley and Borel are ready to contribute, then you would assume the Packers may have to go with the youth and not with an aging veteran like Driver.

Driver is well liked by all of his teammates as well.  Fellow receiver Jordy Nelson stated what the rest of the receiving corp would like to see, that’s bringing Driver back.

Driver isn’t out yet, but a player that has fought long odds by just getting into the NFL, may find staying in Green Bay one of his toughest battles of all.
