As another wave of hot weather hits the state, Wisconsinites are being urged to find ways to stay cool. Lori Getter with Wisconsin Emergency Management says extreme caution is needed to avoid what could be deadly conditions, with temperatures in the 90s predicted through next week and heat indexes above 100 possible.
Getter says the sick, elderly, and very young are in the most danger when the heat and humidity climbs. There’s an increased risk of heat stroke or other illnesses, which resulted in the deaths of five people in the state last summer.
Getter says everyone should avoid going outside if possible and seek out air conditioned locations. For those without AC at home, she suggests looking for local cooling shelters or visiting shopping centers during the hottest times of day.
For those who work outside, Getter says you should remember to dress in cool clothing, drinking plenty of water, and stay in the shade as much as possible.
Getter also warns against leaving pets or children in a vehicle, noting the heat can quickly create oven-like conditions in a car…even if the windows are open.
