Representatives of both state Seantor-elect John Lehman and state Senator Van Wanggaard are watching the recount of the vote in the 21st state Senate District recall election, which Lehman won by more than 800 votes.
Lehman was at the courthouse as the recall began, saying he wanted to see the process. He raised concerns about the cost of the recount to Racine County taxpayers, estimated at more than $7,000. He says Republicans “beat the drum” about the cost of the recall, but this was started by them and any additional expenses will be on them.
Justin Phillips, Wanggaard’s campaign manager, says the Senator was not expected to attend the recount. He says it will be closely watched for any irregularities that might show up, although they are not expecting any “smoking guns.”
The Wanggaard campaign has said they have received several reports of irregularities. Two possible election issues are already being investigated by the Racine County Sheriff’s Department.
