Brewers take 2 of 3 from the Pirates (AUDIO)

July 16, 2012 By Bill Scott

The (42-46) Milwaukee Brewers capped off a series victory over the (49-39) Pittsburgh Pirates with a 4-1 victory Sunday at Miller Park.  It was the Brewers first of three-straight series against teams in the NL Central ahead of them in the standings.

Yovani Gallardo struck-out a career high 14-Pirates to bump his record to 8-6 on the season.  In all, Gallardo lasted 7-innings allowing just 1-run on 4-hits.  It was the 15th “quality start” for Gallardo in 18-tries this year.  Manager Ron Roenicke was thrilled with his starters day…

The bullpen did their job to secure the win.  Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 8th while John Axford shut the door in the 9th for his 16th save of the season.  Axford says that’s how they got the job done last year…

Offensively, Martin Maldondao had 3-hits while Aramis Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 9-games with an RBI Single.  All four Milwaukee runs came in the 6th inning.

The Brewers entered the weekend 8-games behind first place Pittsburgh.  Despite picking up a game on the Pirates, Milwaukee is still 8-games out of first.  Cincinnati swept the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend to reclaim the division’s top spot.

The Brewers host the Cardinals for a 3-game series starting tonight at Miller Park.  The Cardinals are 4.5 out of first and 3.5 games ahead of Milwaukee in the standings.  Michael Fiers (3-3) takes on the Cardinals Lance Lynn (11-4) for a 7:10 first pitch.
