Crane collapse kills one, injures another

July 5, 2012 By WRN Contributor

One person is dead and another was seriously injured, following a crane collapse on a road construction project in Winnebago County.

DOT spokesman Kris Schuller says it happened near Lake Butte des Morts, where ongoing construction work is taking place on Highway 41. The crane was trying to lift a beam on the Butte des Morts Bridge when it collapsed at around 9am.

Winnebago County corner Barry Busby says one person died on the scene and another worker was taken to a local hospital. The man killed was from Green Bay and was an employee of Waukesha-based Spancrete. The person injured was operating the crane at the time.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

This is the second fatal crane collapse this year for the Highway 41 project. The first was in April near DePere. A 58-year-old Black River Falls man died when a crane that was being assembled collapsed.

UPDATE: Officials have identitifed the man killed in the accident as 35-year-old Joseph Bidler of Green Bay.
