As drought conditions continue to plague farmers, the governor says he will work to get aid for them. Governor Scott Walker says a federal aid request is in the works to help farmers recover from expected crop losses.
Walker says it may take some time before the full extent of the damage from the drought is known, which could have an impact on when the state requests assistance. With most of southern Wisconsin in a severe drought and dry conditions reaching into northern parts of state, the governor say it could be October before the full impact is realized.

Nearly half of the state’s corn crop is currently listed as being in poor condition and some farmers have already moved to start harvesting what they can. Walker says crop damage will hurts more than just farmers. Dairies will have to spend more on feed for livestock as well and grocery prices could see a spike.
The state has asked farmers to continue reporting crop conditions to their local U.S. Farm Services agency. That information will assist with any request for federal aid in the future.
