Cops collar axe wielding banjo player

August 7, 2012 By Bob Hague

Madison police say an intoxicated 20-year-old man swung his banjo at a bartender, then threatened him with a hatchet. Andre Stoltzfus wasn’t happy about being asked for his ID when he ordered a drink at a Williamson Street tavern on Monday night. He allegedly began yelling and cursing at the bartender inside the Willy Street Pub. When Stoltzfus struck the bartender in the leg with his banjo, the bartender took him by the arm and walked Stoltzfus outside. There, according to the police report, Stoltzfus took a hatchet out of his backpack. The bartender went back inside the tavern and locked the door. Police found Stoltzfus nearby, walking his dog. His blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit. Stoltzfus was arrested and his dog taken to the Dane County Humane Society.
