Elderly driver charged in bicyclist’s death

August 3, 2012 By WRN Contributor

A 90-year-old man accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist in June has been ordered to turn over his driver’s license. Archie Van Wormer Eau Claire resident made his initial court appearance Thursday. He’s charged with homicide by negligent driving.

Police said Van Wormer drove his SUV down a bike trail along Clairemont Avenue, striking and killing 51-year-old Kirk Cartwright. Witnesses said Van Wormer was not wearing glasses, as required by his driver’s license. Van Wormer is free on a $25,000 signature bond, and is due back in court next Thursday, where a judge may determine if he’s competent to stand trial.
