Benson expected to miss considerable time

October 9, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers may be playing running back by committee for awhile.

Cedric Benson

Alex Green got the work when Cedric Benson left Sunday’s game against the Colts with a foot injury.  Brandon Saine and James Starks are also waiting for their opportunity.

Mike McCarthy said Monday that Benson has already been ruled out of this Sunday’s game at Houston.  ESPN reported Monday night at Benson could miss at least eight weeks with a Lisfranc fracture of his left foot.  The recovery time is at least 6 to 8 weeks and for many it can be season ending.

Regardless of whether or not surgery is needed, the chance of Benson winding up on season ending injured reserve appears to be high.

If Benson winds up on I.R., it could be costly for him as well.  Benson signed a 1-year, minimum-wage, split contract when he signed as a free agent in August.  His base salary would drop from $825,000 to $393,000 if he lands on injured reserve.

Of the three remaining running back son the roster, James Starks has the most experience.  Starks is returning from a turf toe injury and once held the starting job with the Packers during their recent Super Bowl season.

Brandon Saine hasn’t played a down from scrimmage so far this season.

Green had 9 carries for 55 yards against the Colts, including a 41 yard run in Sunday’s loss.
