Driver who killed cyclist said he fell asleep

October 12, 2012 By WRN Contributor

A bicyclist killed in Dane County this week has been identified as 37 year-old Carrie Pete of Madison. Investigators with the Dane County Sheriff’s Department said the driver of the pickup truck which struck Pete on Monday told deputies that he fell asleep at the wheel, and statements by other motorists in the area at the time corroborate that. The accident occurred on a county highway near Governor Dodge State Park.

Charges have not been filed at this time against 21 year-old Timothy Grulke of Waunakee. Pete was the second bicycle fatality in Dane County in less than a week. Last Wednesday, 21 year-old Tyler Knipfer of Madison was pinned beneath a vehicle on the city’s east side and died several days later. Monday’s crash was the ninth bicycle fatality in the state this year.
