Bayfield man dies after going through ice

January 27, 2013 By WRN Contributor

A Bayfield man is dead as the result of spending more than 30 minutes in the icy waters of Lake Superior. The man, 34 year-old Jim Hudson, was on a snowmobile when it broke through the ice in a channel between Bayfield and Long Island just after 1 p.m. Saturday, according to the Ashland County sheriff’s office.

Hudson, a local fishing guide, was airlifted to a Duluth hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A fund to support Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, who was identified as Jim Hudson’s wife, and the Hudson family has been established online.

Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, a photographer, took a picture of a man and his dog, John and Schoep, in Lake Superior that received worldwide attention.
