Premier snowmobile event celebrating 50 years

January 10, 2013 By WRN Contributor

It’s the 50th anniversary year for what’s considered the premier snowmobile racing event in the U.S. and the attractions are beginning in Eagle River. The Amsoil World Championship Snowmobile Derby features an opening this weekend with the Vintage Snowmobile Weekend schedule. Chuck Decker, the track owner, says practice begins today for the vintage sleds with racing over the weekend and many great drivers returning.

With the 50th anniversary event, Eagle River Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Connie Heeg says they are expecting an extra-large crowd and a “phenomenal” economic impact to the region.

Decker expects “record weekends” for both the vintage and derby weekends. He says they usually get between 3,000 and 5,000 spectators during the opening vintage sled races. The following weekend he says they will do more than 20,000 spectators.
