A Lutheran bishop was intoxicated when his vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Sunday afternoon. That’s according to police in Sun Prairie, who said 59-year-old Bruce Burnside created a trail of debris which included a fallen traffic light. Officers found Bunsdide in his car about a block from the crash scene near an off-ramp from northbound Highway 151.

Burnside was taken to the Dane County Jail and charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. The victim has been identifed by the Dane County MedicaL Examnor as 52-year-old Mauren Mengelt of Sun Prairie. She was taken to a local hospital where she later died.

Burnside is a bishop with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s South Central Wisconsin Synod, based in Madison.
