Janesville church plans giant cross

April 15, 2013 By WRN Contributor

A Janesville church is moving ahead with plans to build a 60 foot illuminated cross that will be visible from a nearby interstate.

Pastor Michael Jackson of New Life Assembly of God says the idea to build the large cross on church grounds came about last year. He says the inspiration comes from the belief that “God wanted me, wanted New Life to do this for our church, for our faith, for our community.”

Jackson says construction is expected to start on April 29th with a projected cost of about $60,000. Although there’s no need for city approval, Jackson says they are working closely with officials on the project. He says they are also making every effort to minimize any effect from the night time lighting on the church’s neighbors.

The church did originally consider a 100 foot cross that’s available from the same Alabama manufacturer, but Jackson says they decided against it because it “might not look right” on the property.

The project will also add some landscaping on the property and will eventually include a 4,000-square-foot pavilion and park area.
