Former coach reaches plea deal in sex assault case

July 31, 2013 By WRN Contributor

A former Thorp track coach accused of having sexual relations with a student has reached a plea deal.

A no contest plea was entered Tuesday by 44-year-old Scott Bergman to charges of sexual assault of a student by school staff and bail jumping. As part of the plea deal,  additional charges of possessing child pornography and having sex with a minor were dismissed. They will still be read in at sentencing.

Bergman was accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with the then 17-year-old student. He also had nude and partially nude pictures of the girl on his cell phone.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim’s parents knew of the relationship with Bergman, but did not want to see him prosecuted. There was discussion of Bergman and the victim getting married to avoid charges.

Bergman remains in jail on a $20,000 bond. Sentencing has been set for September 17th.
