Barclay closing in on right tackle job

August 21, 2013 By Bill Scott

It would appear Don Barclay’s experiment at center is over, for now.  When Green

Bay Packers training camp started, Barclay was expected to compete at both tackle and center.

Then T.J. Lang missed some practice time and Barclay was working at right guard.  But with Lang back, Barclay is once again battling Marshall Newhouse for the right tackle job.  Barclay won’t accept the fact that he’s moved into the driver’s seat in the battle and it’s his to lose.  With two preseason games left, he believes anything can happen.

Barclay didn’t mind getting reps at the center position and someday he wouldn’t mind taking another run at that spot.  But for now, his opportunity comes at right tackle, so that’s where is focus is.

Barclay started the last four regular-season games and both playoff games last season.  He allowed four sacks and 19 pressures, but he also did a solid job in the run game.

So far in this training camp, Barclay has been solid.

Marshall Newhouse started training camp as the number one right tackle and started the first preseason game against Arizona.  Barclay then started the second game against St. Louis and rotated series with Newhouse during the first half.
